3 Reasons to Stay
Sharp: As your shears begin to dull they require more pressure
to cut through the hair. This is pressure is the root cause of many
issues.
Your Customer – when using more pressure
to cut through the hair the hair follicle is damaged. Even if you are the top
stylist in the world, your great cut will quickly turn into a frizz ball on your
client’s hair. The number one cause of split ends is dull shears. This is
somewhat counterintuitive to the clients and so they blame their hair or their
product, and while that may be the case for some, the number one cause remains
dull shears. Just like using a styling razor for more than a few clients
damages the hair, so do dull shears.
Your Hand – The more pressure you have to
use, the more strain on your hand. As a stylist your hand is responsible for
putting food on the table. Don’t risk shortening your career by using dull
shears and putting unneeded stress on your hand.
Your Shears – No one drives their car
until the motor blows up and then takes it in for an oil change. We generally
just change our oil about every 3,000 miles, this is called preventative
maintenance. Although you wouldn’t treat your car this way it is how stylists
treat their shears. They wait until they stop cutting, and then decide to call
a sharpener to have them fixed. This is one of the worst things you can do for
your shears. Shears need sharpening long before they get to the point that they
physically wont cut through the hair. If you wait that long to have them
sharpened then more metal needs to be taken off of the blade in order to get
down past all of the damaged area. If you have your shears sharpened once every
500 haircuts your shears will only require a very small
amount of metal taken off the blade thus prolonging the life of your #1
tool.
