How long will your hair cutting shears stay sharp?

Keeping your hair cutting shears sharp, cut after cut, is partly dependent on how well you treat them and what kinds of hair you cut with them. Your shears are your livelihood, so treating them with respect is a must. If you toss them in some Barbicide and ignore them, they're going to go dull very quickly. From the best to the worst shears, they need a little TLC.

A good pair of hair cutting shears, treated properly, will stay sharp through about 700 cuts. This is a rough estimate, and many factors can affect the speed of dulling, so make sure you pay attention to how well your shears are performing and get them sharpened as often as you need. If they start pulling hair or the ends lose their sharpness, you should get them sharpened right away. At that point, they've stopped giving good cuts and your clients will notice.

Cutting chemically treated hair, coarse hair, or dirty hair can make them dull faster. If you find yourself working primarily with chemically treated hair, you should give them a little extra attention every day. If you drop your shears, don't panic! Pick them up in the position they landed in and avoid trying to close the blades. Dropping can throw the tension out of alignment and nick the blades, which will cause very painful pulling. Bring or mail them to your sharpener so that any nicks in the blades can be repaired and the tension realigned so they will be as good as new.

To keep your shears at their sharpest through cut after cut, the primary thing you will need to do is adjust what you do after each cut. Your shears need to be sanitized, but they shouldn't be left to soak in Barbicide, and also shouldn't be dropped into anything where they may land hard on the tips. Try to give them a good wash with warm, soapy water instead, and definitely clean them that way at the end of each day. Make sure to clean, and carefully dry the area where they blades meet. Dry with a towel and store in a case. Use an oil for scissors, or lubricant, around the pivot joint at the end of each week.

Keeping your hair cutting shears at peak sharpness only requires a little extra attention, and you'll be rewarded with better cuts and happier clients.
