Like every stylist in the world, I have my favorite shears. It's hard for people who are not professional stylists to understand, but to a hair stylist scissors are more than just a tool. They're more like an extension of our arm, and, more importantly, like an extension of the part of our minds that envisions a look and then reaches out to make it a reality for a client.
Gather any group of stylists together and before long the topic will turn to hair stylist scissors. That's also when the sparks start to fly, because everyone has their own ideas about shears and their own favorite. For me, it's Hattori Hanzo's HH-3 Thumb Swivel Ayako. I never knew what a pleasure it could be to handle a pair of hair shears until I got used to my first pair of Ayakos. Ayako is a Japanese word combining design or beauty with child. That's because learning to use a pair of thumb swivel shears is like learning to walk all over again. It takes a bit of effort and some patience, but once you get used to them there is no turning back. Not only are they a pleasure to use, I love the unique look. It doesn't hurt that the unique style stands out from the crowd, either. No one would dare get caught with my "Japanese shears" at their workstation.
Hattori Hanzo offers many other models, but this is the one for me. Before I bought my Ayakos, I tried a different make and model every time I got new shears. No one can say I didn't give the others a chance. My Ayakos are my favorite, hands down.
It's easy for a stylist to understand why the right pair of shears is important, but everyone else just rolls their eyes when you talk about hair stylist scissors. I used to talk to my mother until I was blue in the face about the importance of good shears. I'd think I had her convinced, then she would need a new pair and come home with a pair of junk shears. My mother always said that she only cut her own hair and didn't need good shears. So one year I bought her a pair of shears from Hattori Hanzo. After she tried them, she apologized for doubting me. She says she'll never be without good hair scissor again.
