There is nothing like cutting with a new pair of quality scissors. The ease with which they go through the hair is unparalleled. Unfortunately, as the weeks or months pass, you may find your tool becoming more difficult to use. One of the best ways to preserve the cutting quality of your new shears is to keep them sharpened.
As a general rule, shears should be professionally sharpened once for every 500 haircuts performed. This applies to all quality hair shears, even Hattori Hanzo which manufactures the best shears in the world. It is a great guideline to adhere to for those stylists who are consistently cutting clean hair that is well conditioned and of normal density.
Exceptions to this rule apply to stylists that regularly cut coarse, damaged or color treated hair. Also included are those who are prone to dropping their shears or storing them improperly. All of these things can cause damage to your tool well before the 500 haircut threshold has been met.
Consider the types of hair that your Japanese scissors or shears will be used on and adjust your sharpening schedule accordingly. If you decide that 400 haircuts is your cut off, don't hesitate to have them sharpened at that time. Do what works for you, but never exceed 500 haircuts
It is very important that you do not wait too long before having your hair scissors sharpened because a large amount of metal must be removed in order to make a very dull shear sharp again. Removing large amounts of metal drastically shortens the life of your tool and causes you to replace it much more often than you should. The simplest way to avoid these extra costs and enjoy your shears for many years to come is proper maintenance and a strict adherence to your sharpening schedule.
