WHEN:
How often should you sharpen your
shears?
We recommend that shears are sharpened
every 500 haircuts. For some that seems like a lot of haircuts, for others not
many at all. Some manufactures recommend that shears are sharpened once a
year. If you work at Supercuts and do over 20 haircuts a day that would be 400
a month and 4,800 cuts in a year. There for it is much better to understand
sharpening frequency in terms of haircuts not time.
Be careful of anyone who tells you that
“if you buy a high quality shear you will never have to sharpen it”.
Most
likely this comes from a shear sales person who has only one agenda, which is to
sell you their shear. There is no such thing as a shear that you “never” have
to sharpen.
To put things into perspective, “How
often do you change out the blade on your shaving razor?” (this works for your
styling razor as well as the razor you use to shave your legs, (or face for male
stylist)
Your shaving razor dulls with only a few
uses. This is because of how sharp the edge is on the razor. The metal cannot
hold that razor sharp edge for more than a few cuts. Your shears have a 35 to 45
degree edge, and, under normal conditions, will hold for around 500
haircuts.
What can cause premature
dulling?
- Improper Storage
- Improper Care and Maintenance
- Dirty Hair
- Damaged Hair
- Coarse Hair
- Treated Hair
- Chlorinated Hair
- Softer Steel
- Product in Hair
- Dropping
- Improper angle given when sharpened
