Why Are Left Handed Hair Shears So Hard to Find?
Why is it so hard to find left handed hair shears that truly are made for lefties? I know we southpaws are in the minority, but surely there are enough of us to support a sizeable left handed hair shears industry. So why aren't there more options available? I have my own theory on this subject. I think most left handed stylists just give up and use right handed shears.

As a left-handed child I struggled with "reversible" craft scissors. The art teacher, all of my elementary teachers and even my own mother handed me scissors that were supposed to work just as well for left-handed people as they did for righties. They never did. Most of the time the paper just slid between the blades. Even if I could get the scissors to cut, they never cut cleanly or smoothly. I felt like a clutz until just before fourth grade, when I practiced cutting with my right hand all summer. I got it down, to a degree, and I never looked back. Anything was better than trying to use so-called reversible scissors.

Eventually, I realized I wanted to be a stylist. By then I thought I could cut as well with my right hand as with my left. Once an instructor showed us shears that could be adjusted for lefties. I tried them out. It was the first time I had held hair shears in my left hand. I made a few practice snips in the air and knew I'd been kidding myself when I believed I could cut as well right handed. But it was different when the shears touched real hair. They were awkward and useless. I figured I'd cut with my right hand forever.

Later I found out I wasn't the only stylist using the wrong hand. One day, though, I watched a new stylist and realized she was cutting with her left hand. That's how I found Hattori Hanzo's left handed shears. She used the HH2P-6.0 Kae Waza left handed shears. As soon as I could, I ordered my own pair of Kae Waza shears. "Kae Waza" means "different technique," and the name alone tells you that Hattori Hanzo understands left handed stylists. The first thing I noticed was the comfort. But most amazing was the improvement in my skills. The creativity just seemed to flow. I became a far better stylist as a result. I'll never go back.
